Daily Briefing, 6/4/2009

Good morning everyone! Here is what we have today:

Here we go again: Saucon Valley teachers have reauthorized a strike, though they have not yet set a time frame for when they would walk off the job. In Allentown, City Council voted to extend Keystone Opportunity Zone tax breaks to certain properties in downtown. In Lehigh County, the administration and county commissioners have begun to discuss the 2010 budget, with both acknowledging that cuts will have to be made and a tax cut is a possibility.

In state-wide news, Senate Democrats unveiled a business tax cut proposal yesterday. The proposal would reduce the corporate net income tax by 2% and phase out the corporate stock & franchise tax on a business' physical assets.

In national and world news, President Obama is in Cairo, giving a speech to the Muslim world - the speech is being given right as I type this. In America, New Hampshire's Governor signed a law yesterday that legalized gay marriage, making it the 6th state to do so. And, at least one company is adding new jobs this year, about 22,000 of them: Walmart.

We have one Chamber event today: the Phillipsburg Area Chamber of Commerce scholarship luncheon.

And that's it! Have a great day - we'll have another entry for you later today.
