Some sad news out of Allentown, as former legislator, teacher and coach Jack Pressmann died over the weekend while hiking out west. He was 56. In other news, the Express Times runs a story on a bill currently in the legislator that would increase the sales tax by 1% in order to reduce property taxes and provide money for regional initiatives. In Allentown, Mayor Pawlowski has announced his plan to close the city's $9.5 million deficit. The plan calls for a variety of measures, including selling city property, sewer capacity, delaying raises and offering early retirement incentives.
In a huge political story, Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan has officially announced that he will run for Congress and challenge Congressman Charlie Dent.
In national news, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin resigned yesterday, officially turning over the state to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell.
