Daily Briefing, 8/12/2011

Good morning everyone!  Here is today's Daily Briefing.

A police officer, Robert Lasso, was shot and killed in Freemansburg borough, Northampton County. The suspect, George Hitcho, was arrested immediately.  In Allentown, former developer George Mendelson was sentenced to thirty days house arrest for bribing a bank official and conspiracy.  In South Bethlehem, officials formally opened the 1.4 mile Bethlehem Greenway, with a larger phase of the project on the way later.

In national news, first-time jobless claims dropped by 7,000 last week, hitting its lowest point in four months.  Minority Leader Pelosi named the final three Democrats to the debt super-committee: Chris Van Holland (D-MD), Xavier Becerra (D-CA) and James Clyburn (D-SC).  Republican Presidential candidates held their third debate in Ames, Iowa yesterday.  The postal service has said it wants to cut 120,000 jobs and reduce benefits by 2015.

That's it for now!  Have a good one and we'll see you later.
