Many efforts have begun during  the  past year to tackle workforce issues raised at a 2013 Manufacturing Council Summit. September’s  Summit,  will focus on “Actions Needed to Help More Students be Ready for Manufacturing. What has changed in the past year? What is being planned?”

Dr. Clyde Hornberger, former director of the Lehigh County Vocational-Technical School, will open the Summit by presenting  his recent recommendations to the Commonwealth for improving the quality of and access to career and technical education programs. His study, “Skill Up:  the Student Pipeline to Support Advanced Manufacturing in Pennsylvania,” identifies ways of improving student readiness for advanced manufacturing careers and provides recommendations for  career and technical schools across the state.

Following the presentation, Dr. Hornberger will be joined by a panel of top administrators from Lehigh Carbon Community College, Career Institute of Technology, and Bethlehem Vocational Technical School to explore  “Engaging the Best and the Brightest in Technical Training”.  Peter Rittenhouse, Nestle Waters North America, will then lead the Allentown and Bethlehem School District Superintendents in a “STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)  Initiatives in High Schools” discussion. Representative Ryan Mackenzie, Vice Chair, Pennsylvania House Labor and Industry Committee, will wrap up with a legislative update  including  his  proposed CareerBound tax credit legislation.

We hope you will be able to join us for this important event on September 11 from 4 - 6 p.m. at Artsquest Center in Bethlehem.  For more information, please contact Liz Weaver at 484-264-6630 or lizw@lehighvalleychamber.org
