Apprenticeship: Where Investment Meets Innovation

Nancy Dischinat, Executive Director, Lehigh Valley Workforce Development Board, Inc.

I am proud to share this story...Apprenticeship: Where Investment Meets Innovation

“Through apprenticeship, job seekers are able to explore a new career pathway, receive an education, and a credential that makes them more marketable to employers. Employers are presented with vetted candidates who are motivated and exited to embark on this journey. Everyone wins.” -Nysha Henderson Long time unemployed Career Navigator-March 2016

In the fall of 2015, PA CareerLink®Lehigh Valley hired Nysha Henderson to assume the role of Long-Term Unemployed Career Navigator. Henderson is tasked with assisting long-term unemployed individuals with reemployment opportunities via apprenticeship, On-the-job training (OJT), and scholastic funding within the Advanced Manufacturing, Energy, and Healthcare sectors.
With a focus on the growing need for EMT/Paramedic workers in the Lehigh Valley, Henderson reached out to Cetronia Ambulance Corps to discuss their staffing needs.

As a precursor to a formal partnership, Henderson helped establish a pre-apprenticeship pathway, allowing job seekers the opportunity to learn about Centronia through shadowing with current employees. In turn, Centronia was introduced to potential talent.

Next steps involved identifying potential apprentices, assessing their skills, and partnering with an educational provider to provide the requisite 144 hours of instruction.  By January 2016, Henderson had put all of the pieces together and submitted the necessary documents to the U.S. Department of Labor (Office of Apprenticeship) and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor (Labor Law and Compliance Departments.
By February, the partnership was approved and the first two apprentices were enrolled in the Commonwealth’s first four-year EMT/Paramedic apprenticeship program.

“I look forward to growing our partnership with Centronia Ambulance Corps,” said Henderson. “And to creating new opportunities for local businesses and job seekers in the Lehigh Valley.”
